The state Department of Game, Fish and Parks has scheduled a groundbreaking at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, for the new Outdoor Campus-West in Rapid City.
The "West" in the name refers to the facility's location on the other side of the state from the original Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls.
Outdoor Campus-West will feature many amenities for the public, including nature trails and interactive exhibits. The site will also be home to community programming for children and adults.
The core programming areas are hunting, fishing, outdoor education and outdoor skills. Within those core areas are activities such as conservation, wildlife biology, camping, canoeing/kayaking, hunter safety, fish identification and fish cleaning.
The facility will cost about $13 million to build and is scheduled for completion in April 2011. The project is funded by sales of hunting and fishing licenses.
