State considers temporary increase in pheasant limits

As I noted in a previous post, the delay in this year’s harvest has made pheasant hunting more difficult because the birds have had more places to hide. According to news reports this week, the number of pheasant-hunting licenses also is down from last year, possibly due to the economic recession. That adds up to a lot of birds left out there in the state, and not a lot of time left in the hunting season.

To address the situation, the state Game, Fish and Parks Commission will meet Thursday to discuss the possibility of temporarily increasing the bag and possession limits for pheasants. If approved, the proposal would bump the daily bag limit per hunter from three to five and the possession limit from 15 to 25. The changes would be effective from Saturday through Jan. 3, the final day of the regular pheasant-hunting season.

The Game, Fish and Parks Commission voted down this proposal. It received only four of the needed five "yes" votes from the eight-member group.
