Video: How to get started in kayaking

My day job is reporting for The Daily Republic in Mitchell, S.D. Recently, the newspaper started a how-to video series on its Web site. The series features short videos of local experts teaching viewers how to do various things.

A couple of weeks ago, the staffers who put the videos together were up against a deadline and couldn’t get a local expert lined up. They asked if I would do a video about kayaking, and I agreed.

I’m somewhat reluctant to share the video with you, because there’s a reason I’m a print journalist and not a broadcaster. I don’t feel all that comfortable in front of the camera. But it’s not that easy to come up with blog posts several times a week, and this one fell into my lap. Besides that, I think the video turned out OK. It gives some basic tips about buying a kayak, getting into it and paddling calm lakes and rivers.

Here it is:

  1. Cool video. I just started getting into kayaking last summer. Have went out a few times this summer although the weather hasn’t been the most accommodating on the available weekends I’ve had open. Do you have a suggestion of some good rivers and/or lakes in the eastern area to kayak? Is there any kayaking organizations in the area?

Here’s a good canoeing and kayaking brochure from the state Department of Game, Fish and Parks that lists places to paddle: http://www.sdgfp.info/Publications/Parks/CanoeKayakSD.pdf.

As to your question about organizations, there is at least one: http://sdcka.blogspot.com/.
